A Tribute To Our Troops, Past, Present and Future

troopstributeBuilding on the success of the inaugural 2010 A Tribute to Our Troops dinner, a community-based volunteer committee has again come together to celebrate the troops of The Ontario Regiment and to raise funds for The Ontario Regiment Foundation.

The 2nd Annual Dinner is set for Thursday, April 7th 2011, at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility. If you would like to sponsor or attend this amazing event details can be found at www.troopstribute.com and click on partnership opportunities. The Dinner is $150.00 per person. For more information just go to the website or call Sgt. Andrea Downey, Regimental Chief Clerk at 905-721-4000 ext 4027.

While support to all members of our Canadian Forces is important, this event will be focused on Durham Region’s own Armoured Reserve unit, The Ontario Regiment (RCAC). Founded in 1866, The Regiment’s soldiers have come from throughout Ontario County and served in every major conflict including the Fenian Raids and Boer War, Paschendale and Vimy in World War I, the Liberation of Italy and Holland in World War II, and in Peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the Golan Heights, Cambodia, and the former Yugoslavia. Based in Oshawa, today the Regiment has a wide footprint, drawing on all of Durham Region and beyond to ensure trained soldiers are ready to serve in Canadian foreign and domestic operations.

It is a very difficult and worrying time for many in our armed forces and their families – even right here in Durham Region. Thirty-two of our local soldiers have returned from duties in Afghanistan, four are currently there in “harm’s way” and another twelve are preparing to go this April. Through generous support of sponsors such as you we can help the people who have served, continue to do so, and provide strength to their loved ones – all of whom have given and continue to give so much for us and our Country.

Last year, the A Tribute to Our Troops Dinner raised over $60,000 for The Ontario Regiment Foundation. The foundation sets up programs for soldiers and their families who are beyond the scope of government funding – such as Post Secondary Bursaries, Post Secondary Family Scholarships for their children and a Benevolent Assistance Program for individuals or families in times of need. The Troops Dinner also assists the Foundation to continue providing support for youth programs conducted by The Regiment’s four Army Cadet Corps, as well as support the Regimental Museum, and assist with the purchase of uniforms and equipment not supplied by DND but necessary to preserve The Regiment’s distinguished history and its outstanding connection to the community.
