Supporting the ‘Solve the Crisis’ Campaign – A Call for Collective Action

As the voice of the Greater Oshawa business community and, indeed, as citizens of the Greater Oshawa area, we recognize the urgent need to address the escalating humanitarian crisis that is unfolding across our province. This week, Ontario’s Big City Mayors (OBCM) launched the ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign, drawing attention to the alarming number of Ontarians who are homeless, living in unsafe spaces, and struggling with mental health and addiction issues. This crisis, as highlighted by OBCM, is not only impacting our downtowns and public spaces but is also putting an unbearable strain on our most vulnerable residents.

Oshawa, like many other cities across Ontario, has been grappling with this complex issue for years. Municipalities, including ours, have invested considerable resources into various programs aimed at providing relief and support to those in need. However, despite these efforts, the situation continues to deteriorate, underscoring the need for a coordinated, province-wide response.

The OBCM’s ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign is a crucial step in this direction. By calling for a dedicated provincial ministry to take charge of the full spectrum of housing, mental health, and addiction support needs, the campaign aims to ensure that these interconnected issues are addressed comprehensively and effectively. As the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, we stand in full support of this initiative. It is clear that while various levels of government have taken important steps, including the introduction of programs like Ontario’s Roadmap to Wellness and the Homelessness Prevention Program, these measures have not been sufficient to stem the tide of this crisis.

The OBCM’s request for the provincial government to appoint a responsible ministry with appropriate funding and powers is a necessary move. Such leadership would not only streamline efforts across multiple sectors but would also empower municipalities with the tools and resources they need to transition individuals from encampments to more appropriate supports. Furthermore, the proposal to establish 24/7 Community Hubs or Crisis Centres would provide a much-needed alternative to emergency centres, which are currently overwhelmed by the sheer volume of cases they are handling.

We also echo the call for the creation of a task force that includes representatives from municipalities, healthcare, first responders, community services, the business community, and the tourism industry. This collaborative approach is essential to developing a ‘Made in Ontario’ Action Plan that addresses the unique challenges faced by our communities. The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce believes that by bringing together these diverse voices, we can develop innovative solutions that not only address the immediate crisis but also lay the groundwork for long-term systemic change.  Further, the Oshawa Chamber has a standing policy resolution with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, urging the Ontario government to better enable first-line response to those in crisis, right at the front line level.

While we acknowledge the efforts that have been made so far, it is evident that there is still considerable work to be done and that, collectively, we are still not getting ahead of this problem. The crisis we are facing is multifaceted, and it demands a response that is equally comprehensive. As we advocate for stronger action from the provincial government, we also call on our community members to support this campaign. By visiting solvethecrisis.ca and contacting your local Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP), you can play a vital role in urging the province to take the decisive action that is needed to solve this crisis.

In conclusion, the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce remains committed to working alongside the Ontario Big City Mayors, Ontario Chamber of Commerce,  and other stakeholders to address this pressing issue. We believe that by standing together and supporting the ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign, we can make meaningful progress toward ensuring that every Ontarian has access to safe housing, mental health support, and addiction services. The time to act is now, and we are ready to do our part in this critical effort.
