Since launching his career as an articling student with Creighton Law in 1978 and becoming a partner four years later, Charlie Morison has earned a reputation for his commitment to getting the right solution, not just winning the case.

Established in 1885, Creighton Law is the oldest law firm in Durham Region and among the oldest in Ontario. “It’s rewarding to hear clients tell me they came to my law firm and stayed with my law firm because their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were clients and were well served,” says Mr. Morison.

He has served in numerous capacities within the legal system beyond his private practice, including Crown Attorney, Dispute Resolution Officer with the Superior Court of Justice and Agent of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer. He has mentored countless high school students on co-op placements.

“One of my driving beliefs in life is that it’s important to give back to one’s community and to contribute one’s gifts – whether they be time, talent or treasure – to building a strong, productive and healthy community,” Mr. Morison explains.

He has been involved in a long list of non-profit organizations that touch many facets of our community, including health care – as demonstrated by his work with the Lakeridge Health Foundation and Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre – children’s groups and community charities like the United Way.

Mr. Morison is also involved with professional organizations such as the Durham Region Law Association, sports organizations, and arts and culture, as demonstrated by his tireless commitment to the Ontario Philharmonic. He takes pride in providing a rewarding professional experience for his employees and appreciates their support and hard work.

Nina Romano Insurance Agency Inc.
1231 Harmony Road North, Oshawa   |   ninaromano.ca

nina_romano_ins

From helping a client in need to sponsoring a sports team and bringing people together in support of the community, Nina Romano Insurance Agency takes pride in being a “good neighbour” in the Oshawa community over the past decade.

Five years ago, Mrs. Romano relocated her State Farm Insurance agency to the historic Dayman House on Harmony Road and earned the City of Oshawa 2012 Urban Design Award. She was happy to give back when asked to sponsor this year’s urban design awards.

The beautiful location is featured prominently in the agency’s community-based marketing and advertising. Mrs. Romano was instrumental in bringing together local State Farm agents to advertise at the General Motors Centre when it opened in 2006. She’s a proud corporate sponsor of the Oshawa Generals and can often be found at the GM Centre cheering on the team.

Mrs. Romano and her dedicated team give back to the community in many ways. For example, they’ve volunteered with the construction of CentreTowne, a new build in Oshawa by Habitat for Humanity Durham, and look forward to volunteering again on the second and third phases of the project.

Nina Romano Insurance Agency sponsors many local soccer, hockey, lacrosse and swimming teams and clubs, and supports several cultural centres and churches. Through their involvement with the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Mrs. Romano and her family have planted trees, lent helping hands at spring cleanups and helped fund local projects.

Mrs. Romano recently participated in a Durham College focus group to develop a business insurance diploma program and in conjunction mentor young students as they develop their own careers.

When Dean Lawrence was looking for a location for a wide-format imaging company that specializes in extreme-resolution printed graphics, the City of Oshawa was a natural choice.

“Oshawa is continually changing, reinventing and revamping itself as a major economic hub of Durham Region,” says the owner/chief client officer of Speedpro Imaging Durham. He saw an opportunity to support local entrepreneurs and new businesses, while helping established businesses grow.

Since it opened in May 2012, Speedpro Imaging has helped clients achieve the ‘wow’ factor through visual communication – from business cards to vehicle wraps and everything in between.

Mr. Lawrence has introduced his company to hundreds of business owners in Durham, serves on the Ambassador Committee for the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and is active with organizations like the Rotary Club of Oshawa. He’s also committed to the professional development of staff.

Speedpro Imaging uses eco-friendly solvent inks and recycles all waste materials. It recognizes the value of community involvement. “Being seen in your community and being socially responsible and ethical not only contributes to the success of the business but the overall well-being and strength of the community,” says Mr. Lawrence.

Speedpro Imaging has donated products and services to the City of Oshawa F86 Sabre Jet restoration project, Rotary Club of Oshawa Ribfest, Autofest and The Shoebox Project. It supports organizations like Grandview Children’s Centre and the Lions Club of Oshawa and will also offer a co-op program for students interested in graphic design or marketing.

Speedpro Imaging earned the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for December 2013 and the Speedpro Corporate Franchisee Fast Start Award for 2013.

triOS College Business Technology Healthcare
200 John Street West, Oshawa   |   triOS.com

trios

Since it was established in 1992, triOS College has served primarily mature students wanting to improve their skills and enter rewarding new careers. It has achieved sustainable growth: it has nine campuses in Ontario – including its John Street West location in Oshawa – and recently expanded into Atlantic Canada.

The college has earned numerous accolades, including Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies for four consecutive years and Top Training partner by Microsoft. It attributes its success to such practices as a tracking system that allows it to capture lead sources, analyze trends and adjust marketing efforts in real time. A high-performance culture, meanwhile, celebrates successes, promotes continuous improvement and encourages employee engagement.

As part of its commitment to delivering innovative programs, triOS identifies emerging market trends for skills or credentials expected to be in high demand, such as video game design and development. It offers some programs on an exclusive basis and embeds technology courses into every program to give graduates a competitive advantage.

By leveraging its extensive domain knowledge in technology, triOS has developed proprietary systems and processes that helps it quickly launch new programs or campuses and streamline administration of such tasks as scheduling classes.

triOS has begun the process of institutional accreditation by the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission. It takes pride in treating each student as an individual and not a number. Since opening its doors in 2008, the Oshawa campus has produced graduates who contribute to our city’s economy, while staff and students make valuable contributions to our community. For example, police foundations students helped build a new playground at a local public school.

Since it was established in 1987, J.J. McGuire has proven itself a leader in its field, building a reputation for integrity, honesty and professionalism – completing complex projects on time and on budget. In that time, it has grown from an annual volume of $3 million to more than $56 million and expects to continue to grow at a rate of 10 to 15 per cent annually.

Much of its business comes from repeat clients, including General Motors, Ontario Power Generation, LCBO, Via Rail Canada, municipalities and school boards. J.J. McGuire is committed to safety training and education. Its loyal team of professionals includes project managers, estimators, project site superintendents, carpenters and labourers affiliated with local unions, safety officers and others.

The firm proudly gives back to the community. It donated more than $25,000 to the Lakeridge Health Foundation last year alone and also supports the Children’s Aid Society by sponsoring numerous families at Christmas, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Parkwood Estate, Ontario Philharmonic and many more organizations.

When J.J. McGuire relocated its corporate office from Pickering to Oshawa last year, it transformed a dilapidated building into a beautiful state-of-the-art space. The environmentally-responsible contractor is dedicated to waste management and leading by example whenever possible.
