Canada Port Authority To Operate the Port of Oshawa Announced

On February 10, 2011 the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, and Dr. Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Oshawa, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced the creation of a Canada Port Authority (CPA) to operate the Port of Oshawa.

"Our government recognizes the significant role the Port of Oshawa plays in the local economy," said Minister Flaherty. "The creation of a Port Authority in Oshawa provides the certainty for businesses to plan and invest in our port, which will create jobs and long-term economic growth. This is a great day for the future of Oshawa and Durham Region."

Role Of Metrolinx In Durham

MetrolinxIn late December the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce participated in a meeting of the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area Chamber of Commerce to hear a presentation by Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx on its plans for the Big Move. The meeting was hosted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in Toronto. The discussion was informative and fruitful and a good start to what is seen as a productive relationship between Metrolinx, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the business community in Ontario.

Announcing Allan O’Dette As New OCC President & CEO

AllanODetteThe Board of Directors of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce announced that Allan O’Dette has been selected as the new President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC).

“Appointing an experienced advocate who has been very active within the Chamber movement will help ensure that the voice of Ontario businesses and Chambers is heard,” said David Sword, Chair of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “This is of particular importance in light of a shifting global economy and renewed fiscal restraint at all three levels of government. Province Urged To Keep Corporate Tax Promise

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is urging the provincial government to keep its promise to reduce corporate income tax (CIT) rates to 10 percent by 2013, amidst reports that the government is considering delaying the tax reduction.

In its letter [PDF] to the Hon. Dwight Duncan, the OCC asks the Minister of Finance to commit to implementing its comprehensive tax package in full.
