Mandate to revitalize GTMA and boost regional cooperation on economic development. Dave Ryan, Mayor of Pickering and Co-chair of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA), announced the appointment of John Tory (pictured right), Chair of CivicAction, as Co-chair of GTMA effective September 1, 2012.
“We are delighted that John agreed to accept this appointment,” said Mayor Ryan. “There is no one more suitable to ensuring that economic development in the GTA is regionally focused, with mutual benefit for all stakeholders. This is especially important in a world where competition for investment is global.”
Greater Toronto’s economic strengths are well-known: a highly educated work force, a diverse and growing population, and a strong financial sector. It ranks third in North America in biotechnology as well as information and communication technology.
“To have success in attracting investment, to create new jobs, and to have a prosperous region, it is critical that there be a more cooperative and coordinated approach to economic development in the GTA,” said Mr. Tory. “Using the CivicAction model of collaboration and quick action, I will focus on developing a one year road map that will result in a strong partnership between governments and the private sector so that, collectively, we can all share in the benefits of a thriving economy.
As Chair of CivicAction, Mr. Tory brings all the necessary skills of bringing a diverse group together to seek common ground and take collective action. Fact based discussion and quick decision making are the organization’s hallmarks of success and this model will be applied to ensure that the Greater Toronto Area harmonizes and harnesses its efforts in attracting international investment to the region.
