March 2023 – Simplify information sharing to improve specialized mental health care for people experiencing homelessness

Project Health:

Project is on track.

Update At-a-Glance:

UPDATE: May 3, 2023

At the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 AGM, held this past weekend in Niagara Falls, ON, the OCC membership voted 94% in favour of the Oshawa Chamber’s resolution, moving the resolution’s status to being officially adopted by the OCC as part of its ongoing advocacy platform for the next three years.  There was a third recommendation added to the resolution following some discussion and debate on the floor at policy day.  The verbiage will be added to the below-linked document once the Oshawa Chamber team has a copy of the updated version.

This post will continue to be updated until this resolution is adopted and actioned by the Ontario government, or until the required laws are adjusted to accommodate the recommendations described in the resolution, or until the Oshawa Chamber stands at a subsequent Ontario Chamber after 3 years to ensure that the resolution stays on the OCC’s advocacy platform until it is appropriately actioned.

UPDATE: March 31, 2023
The Oshawa Chamber, working with the Government Relations Committee and key community stakeholders, has presented a policy resolution to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.  This resolution will be debated at the OCC AGM and Convention taking place in April 2023. The resolution seeks to facilitate information sharing between service providers, including law enforcement, medical, and social services, in order to better serve the individual and, by extension, the community.

The resolution is supported by five additional Chambers or Boards of Trade, who have agreed to co-sponsor it. An update will be provided after the resolution debate.

  • There are no major Blockers to this project

Policy Resolution Document: Simplify information sharing to improve specialized mental health care for people experiencing homelessness

Roadblocks:

No unexpected roadblocks.  The project is currently proceeding as expected.

Next Steps:

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has added this resolution to its 2023 policy compendium, pending ratification at the 2023 AGM in April of 2023.  The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce team will attend the AGM and present the policy to the floor during Policy Day where the resolution will be debated and, ideally, ratified and added to the OCC’s advocacy work for the coming three years.

Thank you to Nathan Gardner, Executive Director of the Back Door Mission, for his help and expertise in drafting this resolution and to all parties who contributed, supported, and helped to refine the language.  Thank you also to the Sault Ste Marie, Brantford-Brant, Guelph, Whitby, and Scugog Chambers for your support.

We look forward to the Ontario Government implementing the requested changes and helping to reduce some of the root causes of police and security concerns within our downtown business community.
