Minister Brad Duguid To Speak At Durham Economic Prosperity Conference

Durham Region has not only experienced unparalleled economic growth, but is also facing many business challenges going forward. In an effort to maximize the region’s economic opportunities community leaders from business, academia, labour and government are being invited to attend the 4th Economic Conference on the future of Durham Region this fall.

The one half day “think tank” Conference will feature keynote speakers, forums and interactive panel discussions. Confirmed speakers to date are: the Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Innovation; Jianwei Yu, Consul (Commercial) Consulate General of the P.R. China in Toronto; Jeffrey R. Izzo, Chief of Political and Economic Section Consulate General U.S. Department of State; George A. Ross, Deputy Minister Northern Development & Mines; Dr. Ron Oberth, President, Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI); Derek Holt, Vice President Economics, Scotia Capital; Matt Wilson, V.P. Policy, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME); Steve Peters, Executive Director, Alliance of Ontario Food Processors (AOFP); Kathy Weiss, Region of Durham Economic Development & Tourism and Dave Hare, Past-Chair, 2010 DEPC Committee.


The Durham Economic Prosperity Conference (DEPC), introduced in 2006, was an unprecedented success. Since then, every second year forward thinking leaders from across the region meet to discuss the most pressing issues facing Durham Region.

This year’s Committee Chair, Don Conaby, President of Conpute, is pleased to announce that Dr. Tim McTiernan, President of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), will Chair the 4th Durham Economic Prosperity Conference to be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 at the Ajax Convention Centre. As a gathering of influential and diverse leaders, attendees will work together to develop solutions and uncover new opportunities for growth focusing on “Sharpening Durham’s Competitive Edge”. The Durham Economic Prosperity Conference has maintained its reputation as the go-to forum for decision makers from across the Region.

The Conference is a partnership between the Region of Durham, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce.

The Conference will culminate with a report generated and sent to all participants and all levels of government for follow up on the initiatives identified in the report. Partnerships and alliances are often formed to act on specific collaborative projects and initiatives identified at the Conference.
