The Oshawa Port Authority has approved the request by FarmTech Energy Corporation to lease a parcel of land on the Port’s industrial East side for the purpose of building a $200 million state-of-the-art ethanol facility thereby creating hundreds of new jobs, and attracting new opportunity and investment to Oshawa.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to make this contribution to the citizens of Oshawa and the Region of Durham. Not only will the FarmTech project bolster the region’s economy, but it opens an exciting new chapter in the storied history of Oshawa’s industrial, deep water port.” said Authority Chairman, Gary Valcour. As Dan O’Connor, President of FarmTech noted, “This modern facility will bring tremendous economic benefits to Oshawa, including 300 construction jobs, 50 well paying full time jobs, and hundreds of industry related jobs in farming, shipping and port operations.”
Investing In Oshawa
Canada has 28 renewable fuel facilities, generating $1.4 billion in net economic benefits across Canada, according to the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA). The FarmTech ethanol facility will generate millions of dollars annually into Oshawa’s economy and municipal tax base, making Oshawa the latest community to realize the environmental and economic benefits of this clean and green industry.
Utilizing Oshawa’s Port
The modern biofuel facility will take be situated on the east side of the port adjacent to an asphalt plant, salt domes, calcium chloride tanks, steel storage facilities and 8 other industries. With the new rail spur under construction and the deep water port fully operational, the location is the most practical, efficient, and environmentally friendly, allowing corn and distiller grains to be transported by ship and rail as well as by truck. Utilizing Oshawa’s industrial port for moving agricultural products benefits local and regional farmers. It will also help highway gridlock by keeping 12,000 trucks off our roads while also contributing to the reduction of green house gas emissions.
The Benefits of Clean Green Technology in Oshawa
FarmTech’s modern facility will be as clean and green as the ethanol it produces. Ethanol is a drinkable alcohol, and active ingredient in beer, wine and spirits. It is also biodegradable and does not harm the environment.
The production of 210 million litres of ethanol annually in Oshawa will help the federal and Ontario governments meet their mandate of 5 percent ethanol in all gasoline. The GTA, including Durham Region, represents the largest market for ethanol in Canada. Construction of the FarmTech ethanol facility is expected to get underway this summer, with completion by 2014.
