In times of economic uncertainty, the role of chambers of commerce and boards of trade becomes more vital than ever. As businesses across Ontario face the looming threat of potential tariffs from the U.S., the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce wants our members to know that we are working diligently to protect their interests. As part of a national network, we are actively engaged in efforts at the local, provincial, and national levels to advocate for a fair and prosperous trade relationship with our neighbours to the south.
Recently, I received an email from Daniel Tisch, CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, which contained some thoughtful and measured insights on how our collective efforts are shaping the advocacy and support available to businesses across the province. I wanted to take a moment to share some of the key takeaways with you in my own words because they provide such a valuable perspective and reassurance during these uncertain times:
Key Advocacy Efforts to Support Ontario Businesses
- Strengthening Government Relations
The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is collaborating closely with the provincial government and Ontario’s representatives in the U.S. to emphasize the mutual benefits of cross-border trade. Their efforts focus on educating American policymakers about the economic impact of trade disruptions and reinforcing Ontario’s competitiveness within the North American market. - Building Cross-Border Alliances
Engaging with U.S. state chambers has been an ongoing priority, helping to build a united front against potential trade barriers. These relationships not only provide critical intelligence but also foster alignment in efforts to renew the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA) in 2026. - Launching Strategic Business Coalitions
A new initiative, the Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition, is set to bring together leaders from key industries impacted by U.S. trade policies. This coalition will help shape recommendations to government and offer strategic counsel to Chamber members navigating these evolving trade challenges. - Amplifying Our Voice Through Media Advocacy
Through proactive media engagement, the Ontario Chamber is ensuring that key messages about the importance of free trade reach policymakers, business stakeholders, and the public. This includes advocating for policies that support business growth, reduce operational costs, and enhance industry development. - Providing Practical Resources for SMEs
Supporting small and medium-sized enterprises remains a top priority. Efforts are underway to expand programs that help businesses overcome challenges such as workforce development, technology adoption, and exploring new market opportunities.
- Strengthening Government Relations
