Lakeridge Health 2025+: Empowering Durham’s Health Care Future

As a community-driven organization, the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce values initiatives that strengthen Durham Region, creating a foundation where residents and businesses can thrive. Cynthia Davis, CEO of Lakeridge Health, recently shared a vision for the future of health care in Durham that aligns beautifully with our commitment to community prosperity. Her presentation laid out the ways Lakeridge Health is expanding, innovating, and partnering to ensure high-quality care is available close to home. It’s a vision that isn’t just about healthcare—it’s about fostering the vibrant, resilient community we all want for Durham Region.  Personally, I valued how Ms. Davis opened her talk by putting a human face on health care and, as a user of the health care system, also appreciate how this vision from a leader can trickle down within an organization.

Here are the key takeaways from her address, detailing how Lakeridge Health’s growth and innovation will benefit us all.

Local Care for Local People

It’s very clear that Lakeridge Health is aware of the capacity planning factors associated with the projected growth of our community in the coming decades.  Durham’s growth continues to drive demand for health services, and Lakeridge Health is responding by expanding services across its five hospitals and various community care centres. These facilities aren’t just essential; they’re part of our shared community network that enhances quality of life and economic stability.

Some folks may not necessarily be aware that Lakeridge Health serves more than just Oshawa; its reach covers Ajax-Pickering, Bowmanville, Port Perry, and Whitby, with multiple specialty centres like the regional cancer program and the new same-day surgical centres at the Jerry Coughlan Health & Wellness Centre. By ensuring these services are accessible locally, Lakeridge Health is supporting our regional economy—healthy residents mean healthy businesses.

Investing in Growth to Support Durham’s Future

To address Durham’s rapid population growth, Lakeridge Health is making significant investments in infrastructure:

Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment: Nearly doubling in size, this expansion will make high-quality healthcare more accessible while increasing capacity for private rooms, critical care, and emergency services.

New Facilities for Specialized Care: Plans include a new hospital in Whitby and a specialized care facility in Pickering, providing residents with complex care close to home.

Enhanced Services at Oshawa Hospital: As Durham’s central hub for specialized services, Oshawa Hospital’s expansion will allow more residents to access advanced treatments without leaving the region.

These projects bring essential healthcare closer, but they also generate jobs and attract skilled professionals to the area—benefits that ripple through our local economy, supporting small and micro-businesses in countless ways.

Embracing Technology to Meet Community Needs

Lakeridge Health is transforming care by harnessing the power of advanced technology. By partnering with Ontario Tech University, the Partnership for Advanced Technology in Healthcare (PATH) aims to improve patient care and efficiency through innovation. Durham is a region of innovators, and seeing healthcare embrace technology is inspiring. The installation of new PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with Computerized Tomography (CT),) and CT scanners in Oshawa and Port Perry hospitals, respectively, means more residents can access top-notch diagnostic tools nearby.

For business owners, this kind of innovation means that Lakeridge Health is actively preparing to meet our region’s future needs, keeping people healthy, productive, and available for work. It’s about setting Durham up for long-term resilience.  We also had the thought that if BDC economist, Pierre Cléroux was correct at his recent assertion that the hiring market it about to enter another phase of intense competition, then all of this new capacity at Lakeridge Health will make a compelling story for our local employers trying to attract talent from other jurisdictions.

Mental Health: A Priority for a Thriving Community

Mental health is foundational to workplace wellness and overall community health, and Lakeridge Health’s commitment to making mental health support accessible is particularly valuable. The organization’s Together, Best Mental Health initiative simplifies access to mental health services across Durham. Programs like Central Connect make it easier for residents to find the help they need when they need it, integrating support systems that improve community well-being and stability.

For small businesses, having robust local mental health resources means healthier, happier employees. It strengthens our workforce, reduces turnover, and keeps our community’s productivity high. Lakeridge Health’s approach to mental health acknowledges that, as employers, we are all partners in our community’s well-being.

Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Community Engagement

One of Lakeridge Health’s most impactful commitments is its IDEAA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism) Action Plan. This initiative is designed to ensure every Durham resident feels welcome and supported when seeking healthcare services. The organization’s proactive approach in reaching diverse communities ensures that every voice is heard and every need is met.

From a Chamber perspective, this commitment to inclusivity and equity resonates deeply. A community’s strength is measured by how it serves all its members, and Durham’s rich diversity is one of our greatest assets. By building bridges within the community and fostering a sense of belonging, Lakeridge Health is enhancing the social fabric of our region.

Looking to the Future

As we look to the future, it’s clear that Lakeridge Health’s vision goes beyond treating illness—it’s about nurturing the full potential of Durham’s residents, businesses, and communities. Their dedication to building a robust, accessible healthcare system right here in Durham is an investment in our collective prosperity. When residents can access high-quality care, they’re better equipped to lead productive lives, contribute to the workforce, and support local businesses.

For our business community, Lakeridge Health’s vision for 2025+ represents more than just health care. It’s a call to action to support and champion initiatives that make Durham a healthier, more connected, and more resilient place. With healthier communities, we have a stronger, more prosperous business environment.

As Lakeridge Health continues to expand and innovate, we look forward to seeing the positive impacts on our local economy and quality of life. Together, we’re building a Durham Region where businesses, residents, and health care work hand in hand for a prosperous future.
