“I’ll be there even if I have to ski there!” ~ Regional Chair John Henry, addressing the incoming blizzard ahead of this year’s Regional Chair’s Luncheon event.
This year’s Durham Regional Chair’s Luncheon event, co-produced by the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, and the Clarington Board of Trade, provided invaluable insights into the Region’s economic growth, key advocacy efforts, and commitment to community prosperity. Featuring a powerful address by Regional Chair and CEO John Henry followed by a Fireside Chat with Oshawa Chamber Board President Carrie-Anne Atkins, the event underscored the collaborative efforts shaping Durham’s future.
Despite a recent snowstorm threatening to postpone the event, the resilience of our community shone through, reinforcing what makes Durham Region one of Canada’s most desirable places to live and do business.
A Vision for Growth: Economic Development & Business Investments
Chair Henry’s speech celebrated Durham’s economic evolution, highlighting its transformation from a Region of 224,000 residents 50 years ago to over 770,000 today. With an eye toward the future, the Region is poised for significant expansion, anticipating a doubling of its population by 2051.
He emphasized how Durham is emerging as Canada’s energy capital, with major investments in nuclear technology, including small modular reactors (SMRs) in Clarington that are set to revolutionize sustainable energy. Additionally, companies like AtkinsRéalis and Black & McDonald, Lactalis and Martin Brower are expanding their operations in the Region, bringing hundreds of new professional jobs to Durham.
The first acute care centre in Pickering and the planning grant secured for a new hospital are vital steps toward creating a more connected healthcare system to support our rapidly growing population.
Advocacy & Regional Leadership: Navigating Economic Challenges
Economic uncertainty remains a concern, particularly with the looming threat of tariffs on Canadian goods and energy. Chair Henry detailed how Durham Region’s leadership is proactively engaging with municipal, provincial, and federal partners to ensure that local businesses remain competitive in an evolving global economy.
He reinforced that Durham is well-positioned as an advanced manufacturing, education, and healthcare hub, noting that while there will be challenges, the Region’s collaborative approach to economic development ensures ongoing resilience.
Infrastructure & Housing: Planning for a Growing Population
As Durham continues to attract new businesses and residents, infrastructure and housing remain top priorities. Chair Henry highlighted key projects, including:
- The expansion of water treatment and wastewater plants to meet growing demand
- Major developments such as Northwood Business Park in Oshawa
- A focus on transit-oriented developments, including plans for extended GO Transit service into Clarington
With over 1,100 new homes built in northern Durham municipalities and significant urban redevelopment projects underway in Pickering, Ajax, and Oshawa, the Region is ensuring that growth is sustainable, well-planned, and inclusive.
Tackling Homelessness & Public Safety
The event also provided a sobering look at homelessness, mental health, and public safety—key issues affecting local businesses and communities. Chair Henry detailed the impact of innovative projects like 1635 Dundas Street in Whitby, a supportive housing project offering wraparound services for those facing mental health challenges and homelessness.
He reiterated that while local initiatives are making a difference, a national strategy is urgently needed to address these crises at scale. Durham’s leadership continues to advocate for federal and provincial support to tackle homelessness, addiction, and rising crime rates.
The Role of Durham’s Business Community in Advocacy & Growth
The keynote reinforced a central theme: businesses are at the heart of Durham Region’s prosperity. Advocacy efforts—from supporting local business expansion to ensuring fair trade policies—are crucial to maintaining the Region’s economic momentum.
Events like this one serve as critical platforms for business leaders to engage directly with policymakers, ensuring that Durham’s business community has a seat at the table when key economic decisions are made.
