The Regional Municipality of Durham
An emerging power
Durham Region, the largest geographic region in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, encompasses the Cities of Oshawa and Pickering, the Towns of Ajax and Whitby, the Municipality of Clarington and the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.
As an emerging power in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Durham Region has one of the fastest-growing populations in Canada, with approximately 605,700 residents in 2008 and a forecasted population of around one million people by 2036.
Durham Region is a dynamic region with a wide range of advantages, including an abundant supply of land, a skilled labour force, a first-class transportation network, education and training opportunities, and countless features that support balanced living.
Located at the eastern gateway to the GTA, Durham Region ensures quick and direct access to domestic and international markets. The region offers prime access to Canada’s largest market with over five million people, and 120 million American and Canadian customers within a day’s drive. As well, the Region’s well-developed transportation network facilitates the efficient movement of goods and people. Durham Region offers tremendous growth opportunities in the form of serviced and developable vacant land. With developable employment lands in other areas of the GTA in short supply, employment growth will shift to the region. With 34 per cent of the vacant developable industrial land supply, it represents the greatest opportunity in the GTA. Business can count on support from local chambers of commerce, boards of trade, economic development offices and business improvement areas.
