DURHAM — Durham College’s newest building has won an award before the doors even open.
The Centre for Collaborative Education was named the 2018 winner of the Urban Design Award from the City of Oshawa at a ceremony on June 14.
The CFCE is scheduled to open in September and will replace the aging Simcoe Building, which was built as a temporary structure and opened in 1969.
The new building features a combination of limestone, white architectural block, wood soffit, and a Muntz copper metal panel system, with light-filled, flexible spaces inside.
“The CFCE building is visually unique and will serve as a stunning gateway for the college,” says Durham College president Don Lovisa. “The architects have cleverly included part of the college’s history into the new building, by creating a beautiful entrance feature, which incorporates a living wall and reclaimed stone from the original Simcoe building.”
The accessible, four-storey, 75,000-square-foot-facility will house three new interpersonal simulation labs and an anatomy and physiology lab. There will also be a full-service spa to support students in programs such as massage therapy, as well as nine general purpose classrooms and 10 classrooms for the Centre for Success program.
The CFCE will also house the First Peoples Indigenous Centre, Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Transitions and the FastStart program.
