In Memoriam – Gerald “Gerry” Johnston Remembered

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Gerry Johnston after a year long struggle with ALS. Gerry passed away February 24, 2014 in his 72nd year with his family at his side.

Gerry was a former Detective with the Durham Regional Police and also a successful business person. He was the former owner of Canadian Protection Services, Canadian Lock & Key, Newton Property Management and Ontario Guard Services. He has been a tireless volunteer throughout his life and was the first recipient of the “Business Person of the Year” award from the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, served on the Chamber Board of Directors and held the position of Chamber President in 1995.

He gave back to the community that rewarded him through his efforts as a Rotarian and a Shriner. Gerry & Fran enjoyed retirement & travelling with friends and family, usually to their favourite spot at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Gerry fought his battle with ALS with great dignity and was committed to “Making Moments Matter”. The support from his friends, family, and his community is a testament to the person Gerry was.

He is remembered by his loving wife of 38 years, Fran (Smykal). He is the beloved father of Shelley Hilditch (Rob) and Jay (Michelle). Cherished grandfather “Poppy” to Casey, Kyle, Madison and Tanner. Brother of Elenore Shier and brother-in-law to Ed & Marie Mazurkiewich. Son of the late Walter and Stella Johnston.

Funeral Services are entrusted to McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King Street East, Oshawa (905-433-5558) with visitation on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 pm at KINGSVIEW UNITED CHURCH, 505 Adelaide Avenue East, Oshawa (at Wilson Road North).

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to make a donation to support those living with ALS, either through Sunnybrook ALS Clinic or ALS Canada. Masonic Memorial Service Thursday at 6:45 pm. Online condolences may be made at www.makfuneralhome.com.
